Natural Beauty Volume II

This week's version of natural beauty includes a new find, and a new favorite from a company I have loved for awhile, and something I just bought to try!

~I've posted about my love for Thesis Beauty products before, but this raspberry + mint body cream is AMAZING!  It smells wonderful, works great, and again- the packaging receives a 5 star rating.  This cream is shea butter based, so I apply it before going to bed, because it can be a bit greasy when initially putting it on, but quickly settles into your skin and moisturizes nicely.

~Due to multiple allergies and a severe dermatitis reaction I get with regular drug-store deodorants, I have been on the hunt for an all-natural one that actually works.  I found this Nourish Organic Deodarant in Wild Berries on Amazon, and so far, I'm loving it!  It actually works.  The only thing that is different than regular deodorant is that it's a bit more creamy when you first apply it.

~A little honesty moment- I've struggled with IBS for years after some surgical complications and infections several years ago.  I also have a REALLY hard time taking large pills.  So rather than taking nothing at all, I recently picked up these OLLY gummy multi-vitamins + probiotics.  Yes, I realize they're for kids.  But like I said, it's better to take a vitamin and probiotic of some kind rather than nothing, so I'm going to try them!  So far, I approve.  They're not terrible tasting, and I keep them on my bathroom counter so I don't forget to take them!

Have any of you found any good natural beauty products recently?  Do share!

Red Panda Scrubs from Maevn Uniforms

Several weeks ago, I did a review post for Maevn Uniform's new EON scrub (which I LOVE).  Today, I'm bringing you another fabulous collection available from Maevn:  The Red Panda Collection.  I love how versatile these scrubs are, and as usual, that means they have LOTS of pockets!  My favorite top is the curved mock wrap top as it adds a little style to otherwise functional scrubs.  Let me tell you one thing about these scrubs- they wear and wash like IRON!  As with most things in my emergency medicine career, I need durability, and these scrubs meet the challenge.  At my hospital, all of the providers (physicians and PA's) wear navy, and I'm finding that to be a pleasant change from the gumby green scrubs from my prior hospital.  I usually add in my wood watch, a simple necklace (the anchor one above is one of my favorites), my leopard Dansko's, and my black and gold stethoscope, and I'm good to go.

My fantastic friends at Maevn Uniforms have been generous enough to offer a pair of red panda scrubs to one lucky winner.  As with the last give-away, I would highly recommend anyone interested in medicine, studying any pre-medical type field, or currently practicing in medicine to enter!  I promise you'll love these scrubs!

jimmyCASE iPhone Wallet Case

I often feel like my life is constantly shifting between "purse days" and "work bag days".  I am constantly switching out my wallet and such from bag to bag, and inevitably, something gets left behind.  When jimmyCASE sent me one of their iPhone wallet cases for review, I wasn't sure if the concept would work for me, but I love it!  Each case has a (very sturdy) elastic band in various colors and patterns which holds up to 6 cards as well as cash!  For me, I use my phone at work for everything- research, medical apps, timer, flashlight, and it also has the hospital pager system connected through it so that consult services and such reach me through my own phone.  So I know my phone is constantly with me in my pocket.  However, if I feel the need to run to the cafeteria or snack machine, I have to find my bag, get my wallet out, and then go.  And inevitably, by then, something happens in the ER to deter me from actually leaving! haha!  So this idea is perfect for me. Everything I need in one place, and totally perfect for on-the-go.  And I think the pink and grey pattern is absolutely adorable on the real mahogany wood base.  You can find my exact case HERE.

Be sure to check out jimmyCASE!  You won't be disappointed!

Summer Bucket List

I absolutely love summer, and since I'm not in grad school or residency for once, I intend on making the most of this summer! Although I still have to work, I'm making the most of every weekend.  I have already been enjoying picking wildflowers and walks outside, but I made a list of a few specific things I want to do this summer!

Happy First Day of Summer, friends!

Goal Check: Healthier Eating

Between the insanity of moving and starting a new job, my eating habits have not been at their best.  One of my goals is to get my eating back on track. I'll admit, I have a huge sweet tooth, but I equally love fruits and veggies.  Because things have been so disorganized lately, I haven't been putting as much thought into packing my work lunches or making good snack choices, which ironically I did much better during residency.  Since I start work late in the morning and work until the late evening hours, my eating patterns are often slightly off the norm, and I always run into the problem of having packed too little food for work to snack on.  I'm the kind of person who has the metabolism of a hummingbird, and I also get low blood sugar when I don't eat every few hours.

But this week, I decided to make a more concentrated effort with my grocery shopping and food planning for the upcoming week.

I love making home-made smoothies out of whatever fruit, fruit juice, and yogurt I have in the fridge, but if I'm in a pinch, I love to have either Boathouse Farms or Naked Juice smoothies on hand.  It gives me something to drink throughout my shifts, and gets a couple of fruit servings in as well.  I also pick up plenty of whatever fruit may be on sale (this week was nectarines) and

One of my absolute favorite snacks is carrot sticks and guacamole.  These little single serve packs of guacamole are the best, and I pre-wash carrots and sliced up celery sticks to pack in a flash.  Also, Stacy's pita chips are absolutely amazing.  Perfect texture, and also great for dipping!

Another favorite snack (especially if my blood sugar is running low), is backers and cheese.  My favorite crackers since I was a kid are the Pepperidge Farms entertaining trio (I especially love the wheat crackers!) and they're fantastic with those little slices of cheese.  Easy and perfect snack.  I also bring a water bottle to work, and although I'll drink plain water, I'd so much rather have lime or lemon slices in it.  I ALWAYS have a lime or lemon in my fridge to add to my water bottle.  The other thing I always carry around with me is some form of breakfast or granola bar (they got me through ICU rotations in residency!).  I love any version of peanut butter and oats, and I just picked up these KIND bars this week!

I am not a huge meat person at all.  However, I definitely feel better when I have a balanced amount of protein in my diet.  I do love chicken, but I've recently come to love turkey bacon in the morning!  My favorite is the thinner Butterball lower sodium version.  On the days I get out late, I often don't get dinner until 8 or 9PM, and trust me, I do NOT feel like cooking.  I'll pop a Stouffer's veggie lasagna in the microwave  and not only is it filling, but it reminds me of my grandmother who always had some tucked away in her freezer when I would come for lunch.  They may not be the healthiest thing in this pile, but they're still yummy! ;)

Last, but not least, I generally have one or more kinds of berries in my fridge.  Since strawberry season is officially here, I love having access to fresh farm-grown berries!  I love packing these little guys up for work, putting them in cereal, with biscuits, anything!

Well friends, I'd love to hear your ideas for prepping for healthy work-week lunches and snacks!

Natural Beauty: Volume I (Thesis)

A few months ago, I did a post about my journey to natural beauty and bath products.  It has been a slow and progressive journey, but along the way I'm discovering things that I love and work well, and others that don't.  A little while back, I was looking through Amazon for natural products, and stumbled upon Thesis.  I'll admit, the packaging had me at first look.  I LOVE the simple, clean lines and vintage appearance.  I knew I had to try the company, so I purchased a hand cream in vanilla orange, and LOVED it!  Thesis was so kind to send me a few other products to try and review.

~One of my favorite products is the Dead Sea Bath Salts in Rose Garden.  Ohhhh goodness, does this smell good!  I love the smell of old-fashioned roses, and the dried rose petals and silky smooth bath salts make the perfect, elegant, and pampering combination!

~The Body Scrub in Caffe Crema is about as good as it gets.  As a coffee lover, this smells like pure heaven.  The scrub is energizing, moisturizing, and completely decadent!

They also sent me two face masks (check back for another post on those specifically!) and a heavenly smelling Raspberry Mint Body Cream (swoon).

Thesis never uses chemical preservatives (I'm allergic to so many), synthetics, or fillers.  Their products are all-natural , vegan, and almost always certified organic (I mean seriously, does it get better?).

Also, as a health professional (and animal lover), I also really appreciate this statement on their website:

"First off, we're not anti-science-- thank goodness some life-saving chemicals exist! We just strongly believe that synthetic chemicals DO NOT belong in beauty or food products. According to the latest published data, almost 80,000 synthetic chemicals exist today, and many are used in skincare. Lots of poorly researched chemicals are still in use today without sufficient safety data, while every day new disturbing facts emerge linking "approved as safe, non-toxic" chemicals to chronic health problems. Many synthetic chemicals are also not biodegradable. They pollute the environment and kill wildlife while also being tested on lab animals. We do not mean to scare anybody-- merely to inform of potential risks that you should know (and that many manufacturers do not want you to know). It's up to you to decide what to do with this knowledge. "

Thank you so much to Thesis Beauty Purists for the products.  Check them out!
