Dressing For The Young Professional and An Expression of Art

Over the recent short break I had from grad school, I had a chance to do some very fun shopping with my mother.  We hit the outlets, Anthropologie, and J. Crew and came away with some pretty fantastic finds, most of which were on amazing sales (bonus 15% off at J. Crew when you have a student card, FYI!  I knew going back to grad school would have its perks! haha!)
As a young professional, I am always on the hunt for wardrobe staples that can be dressed up with some dressier pants and flats or heels, but also be dressed down with jeans and sandals.

Needless to say, I totally lucked out with my finds and am completely happy with everything I purchased.  I had the opportunity to try out my mix-and-match styles at a recent conference I attended (photos below), but here are a few ways I styled some of these adorable and classic pieces.

The yellow rosette necklace adds an instant dash of color and glamour to the navy and white polka dot Tommy Hilfiger button-up.  For the conference, I dressed it up with cropped grey pants, but I also see this top with some cute eyelet white shorts and Grecian sandals for a cute summer weekend look.

One of my absolute favorite purchases was this white sequined J. Crew tank.  Now, I'm not really one for sequins.  However, when I tried it in, it fit me absolutely perfectly and looked absolutely darling under a cardigan!  I also found these bright blue J. Crew skimmer pants which, paired with a pair of black flats and a bright cardigan, are my new absolute favorites!  Again, I added the rosette necklace for an added sparkle.  For the occasions when I can't wear a statement necklace, I plan to wear my gold monogram or a delicate hand-made vintage creation to "tone it down" a little. :)

Just mixing it all up again to add a little more color to those darling pants!

Another absolutely amazing find were these cute mint eyelet capris from J. Crew.  I love the color and although I debated about how versatile they would be, I'm so glad I purchased them.  I have  paired them with this bright purple cardigan and mint Banana Republic necklace for a professional look and with a navy sleeveless top and sandals for a more casual look.

And lastly, for the times when it's okay to be a little more fun and casual, I put together this little outfit.  Obviously I wouldn't wear this in the professional setting, but I thought it was a cute ensemble for the times when you want a little something more than jeans.   I don't usually buy many tees, but when I saw this one in Tommy Hilfiger, I snatched it right up.  My mother also saw it and said that it certainly looked like me. :)  With a cardigan to make it pop and grey pants, or even jeans, it's an adorable casual look!

I truly enjoyed my conference.  It was refreshing to feel like a professional (something I haven't felt like since being back in the study/test-taking mode again).  It was also fun to dress up a little bit while also being to have a little fun with my outfits!

One of my friends (whom I also styled) and I, all checked in and registered!

Well friends!
I hope you enjoyed my little fashion post.  I hope to do more about dressing as a young professional.  Because I'm in a profession where I'm going to have to dress the part, it's always a challenge to not simply rely on jeans as an outfit staple.  I am a very artistic person, and because I haven't had time since I went back to grad school to create like I used to, fashion is my creative outlet (anyone else feel this way?) :).  I'm excited and nervous about the next chapter of my grad school education, but also so glad to see a light at the end of the tunnel.  I'm also thankful for all the support and answered prayers I've received over the last few years.   So while I may be crazy busy again this next year, I'm looking forward to using this little blog as yet another creative outlet... so enjoy and thanks for reading!

  11. I like what you put together! I dress professionally for my job and also love fashion, just like you! Although I usually dress up more than other people I work with, I think they think I'm about twelve years old, so it doesn't hurt to put on a blazer and some lipstick ;)

Thank you for your sweet comments!
